Task 2: Cows For Farming
Cows are a key resource in rural Cambodia. Cambodian children grow up with cows, and cows are part of the Cambodian family. They provide muscle to plow the rice fields and are the main source of local transportation. Their manure acts as a natural and readily available fertilizer. Unfortunately, today many Cambodian families cannot afford even one cow. AVCLM would provide each family in the village with one cow, while families will also be able to borrow cows from each other to work in the fields. This plan will promote more cooperation and participation within each community.
| Typical Cost | 50 Cows @ $1000 each | $50,000 |
Task 3: Dig A Well
Millions of gallons of Agent Orange have been sprayed in Cambodia, and contamination of the Cambodian watershed remains a major concern many years later. Chemicals are still found in the water as far down as five metres underground. Birth defects have become common in Cambodian children whose parents have been drinking this water for years.
Many village wells are now in disrepair or are no longer usable. AVCLM proposes a well project that will provide Cambodians with clean drinking water. It is often necessary to rebuild the wells from scratch rather than fix old equipment to ensure that people have clean water. The goal is to build two wells with manual pumps in each village. Machines must dig about 50 to 60 metres down into the ground to extract natural spring water that hasn’t been affected by Agent Orange. In addition, a 10,000-gallon storage tank will be installed so that people can also use the wells for basic daily needs such as showering and washing their clothes.
| Total Costs | 2 wells @ USD $7,500 each | USD $15,000 |
Buying the land for 10 hectares for building site one hectare cost $5,000 =$50,000
Task 4: Build Shelters
Cambodian houses are much smaller and more basic than North American ones, and will consist of one sleeping/living space, a separate kitchen and an indoor bathroom to improve hygiene. Cambodians sleep together in one room rather than in separate bedrooms, and sleeping outside is an alternative except in the rainy season. An attached garden can produce most of a family's vegetable and herb needs, using gray water from cooking and cleaning as a source of irrigation. Human waste from the bathroom will be recycled to produce fertilizer for the garden.
Many houses in rural Cambodia are in very poor condition, and not capable of protecting people from the weather. Replacement shelters would be built on the site of existing housing, using community labor. AVCLM would purchase materials, arrange transportation and pay for a contractor to coordinate building efforts.
| Property Costs | 10 hectars of land @ $5,000 each | $50,000 |
| Typical Costs | 50 replacement shelters @ $7000 each | $350,000 |
| Transportation Costs | $18,500 | $18,500 |
| Pay a Contractor & Labour | $29,500 | $29,500 |
| Total Cost | $398,000 | $448,000 |
Task 5: Build Community Facilities/Warehouse
Villages need a secure place to store seeds, community tools and materials for maintaining the village. A warehouse will facilitate the security and safety of food, rice and materials. People also need a space to conduct village business and to store village records. Communications facilities could also be made available in such a space. A community meeting place would also be useful for other organizations to provide education about health and nutrition-related services, as well as meals to supplement the diets of pregnant women, new mothers, orphans and young children.
| Typical Cost | Warehouse/Office/Community Building | $120,000 |
| Transportation Cost | $12,500 | $12,500 |
| Pay a Contractor & Labour | $16,500 | $16,500 |
| Total Cost | $149,000 | $149,000 |
